polytene chromosome

A chromosome with multistranded DNA due to repeated replication of the DNA without subsequent separation. The resulting giant chromosomes are valuable in cytological and genetical research. They are seen in the salivary glands of the larvae of dipteran insects, e.g. Drosophila (fruit flies).
