polyphyletic

Describing taxa derived from two or more ancestral lines. Polyphyletic groups are thought by some to contain taxa whose resemblances are based on shared advanced (derived) characters that have arisen by convergent evolution (see cladistics ). Compare monophyletic , paraphyletic.
