pollarding

A severe form of pruning in which all the younger branches of a tree are cut back virtually to the trunk. It encourages new bushy growth and is often performed on urban avenues of trees to provide summer shade. The tips of the branches of pollarded trees are characteristically club shaped due to the growth of wound wood. Compare stooling.
