plant breeding

The improvement of plants for agricultural,  horticultural,  or medical purposes. Probably all cultivated plants are the result of selection practices that originated some 10 000 years ago. Modern breeding techniques include artificial control of pollination, the generation of variability by artificial hybridization and mutation, and selection procedures such as *pedigree breeding and *backcrossing.
