pigment

Any coloured compound. Pigments are coloured because they absorb certain types of light. Thus in solution they will have a characteristic *absorption spectrum. Because light is a form of energy, pigments that absorb light also absorb energy. The first reaction in *photosynthesis is the absorption of energy by accessory and photosynthetic pigments. Pigments also produce the characteristic colours of flowers and fruits.
