physiological race

(forma specialis) A population   that   is  physiologically  distinct but morphologically indistinguishable from other members of the species. Many fungi have large numbers of physiological races, reflecting considerable genetic diversity, even in nonsexual species. Examples are the various races of certain pathogenic fungi, each of which attack different host species or varieties.
