phototaxis

A *taxis in response to external light stimulation. Cells of Chlamydomonas swim freely towards a light source to enhance photosynthetic efficiency but will swim away if the source is too intense (positive and negative phototaxis respectively). Some chloroplasts also show phototaxis within cells, aligning themselves with respect to the incident light.
