photolysis of water

The photosynthetic splitting of water into gaseous oxygen and reducing equivalents. Two molecules of water are split to produce one molecule of oxygen, four electrons, which go through the electron transport chain, and four protons. The electrons and protons eventually reduce NADP to NADPH. This in turn is utilized in the reduction of carbon dioxide to carbohydrate.
