An individual unit of the * corolla. Petals are thought to be modified leaves with a simplified internal structure, having only one vascular bundle compared with the several normally found in leaves and sepals. Insect-pollinated plants tend to have large, often yellow or white, scented petals often with a nectary at the base and honey guides patterning the surface. The petals of wind-pollinated plants, when present, tend to be small and dull coloured. Compare sepal.
