pericycle

(pericyclic region) The outermost layer of the *stele, lying immediately within the endodermis. In most dicotyledons the pericycle, which is composed mostly of parenchyma cells, also includes modified *protophloem often with the addition of sclerenchyma fibres. The pericycle is a more obvious structure in roots, lateral roots arising from this region.
