nitrogenase

The enzyme system isolated from certain bacteria and shown to be responsible for nitrogen fixation. In the presence of ATP and a suitable electron donor it reduces molecular nitrogen (Ν≡Ν) to ammonia. It can also reduce other compounds with triple bonds, such as acetylene (HC≡CH). The enzyme is destroyed by free oxygen and is inhibited by high concentrations of ammonia.
