natural order

A   historical   category more or less equivalent to the modern *family. Fifty eight natural orders were listed by Linnaeus in 1764, many corresponding closely to present-day families, e.g. Umbelliferae and Compositae. However, the International Rules of Nomenclature state that natural orders cannot be used in place of family.
