nastic movements

(nasties) Plant responses caused, but not directed, by external stimuli. Thus the opening and closing of many flowers are nastic movements, the trigger most often being certain conditions of light or temperature. The movements may be caused either by differential growth rates or by changes in water potential in specialized cells. Compare tropism , taxis. See also haptonasty , photonasty.
