microphyll

A leaf typical of many lower plants, such as lycopods, that is usually relatively small and is not associated with *leaf gaps in the stele. Microphylls are thought to have evolved from early leafless plants by the development of enations or emergences from the axis, each with a single *leaf trace , although the leaf trace probably evolved after the enations. Compare megaphyll.
