micrometer

A device used in microscopy to measure the size of objects accurately. An eyepiece micrometer (graticule) is a round glass disc with an engraved scale, which is placed inside the eyepiece of a light microscope. Before using it to measure a specimen it is calibrated with a stage micrometer. This is normally a glass slide with a scale etched in, for example, one hundredths of a millimetre. The microscope is focused on the stage micrometer so the scale in the graticule can be seen just above the scale of the stage micrometer. The size of the divisions of the eyepiece micrometer can then be calculated against the known scale of the stage micrometer.
