mesocarp

The middle layer of the *pericarp of an angiosperm fruit, positioned between the exocarp and endocarp. In many fruits, such as the peach (Prunus persica), the mesocarp is the fleshy part of the fruit. However, in some fruits no mesocarp is present, the pericarp consisting only of exocarp and endocarp.
