The lysis of a bacterial cell following infection with a bacteriophage. All RNA phages and some DNA phages induce lysogeny. The lytic cycle involves: adsorption of the phage to a specific site on the bacterial cell wall; penetration of the cell by the phage; transcription and translation of the phage genetic material by the bacterium so that many new phages are formed; and lysis of the cell to release the newly synthesized particles. Compare temperate phage.
