A complex invagination of the plasma membrane into the cytoplasm. Lomasomes have been identified in some fungal hyphae and spore-producing structures, algal cells, and in some cells of higher plants. In the prokaryotic cells of blue-green algae, lomasomes, like the mesosomes of bacteria, are thought to be the site of biochemical processes that in eukaryotic cells are associated with the membrane-bound organelles. See chromatophore.
