loess

A fine-textured yellowish azonal *soil that is widespread in central Europe, southern Russia, northern China, and Argentina. It consists of clay and silt particles that were deposited at the edge of the ice sheets during the last ice age. It is a fertile, often calcareous, soil and is the parent material of chernozem soils.
