liming

The addition of lime to a soil to combat acidity, to improve soil structure, or to remedy calcium deficiency. Quicklime (calcium oxide), slaked lime (calcium hydroxide), or ground chalk or limestone may be used. Liming makes heavy clay soils more workable as it encourages the formation of soil crumbs by a process termed flocculation.
