life cycle

The series of events from the production of gametes in one generation to the same stage in the subsequent generation  (see  diagram).   In  some  plants the life cycle only involves the production of one type of individual (see haplobiontic ). In most however, the life cycle encompasses a haploid and a diploid generation, i.e. there is an *alternation of generations.
