leucine

A nonpolar branched chain amino acid with the formula (CH3)2CHCH2CH(NH2)COOH. It is synthesized from pyruvate and is degraded by a complex pathway leading eventually to acetoacetate. Many of the enzymes involved in the synthesis and degradation of leucine are the same as those involved in the metabolism of isoleucine and valine.
