leaf curl

A plant disease in which an increase in cells on either side of the midrib and extra growth of the palisade and spongy mesophyll cause curling and puckering of the leaves. In peach and almond this is caused by the fungus Taphrina deformans and in tobacco and cotton by tobacco and cotton leaf curl viruses respectively. These viruses are transmitted by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci).
