laterite

A hard crust that may develop on the soil surface in tropical regions with alternating wet and dry seasons. In the wet season the soluble mineral salts are washed down into the lower horizons. In the dry season the soil solution moves back to the surface by capillarity and the aluminium and iron oxides accumulate and combine together to form the crust. Laterization results in a sterile soil called a latosol.
