karyogamy

The fusion of two nuclei during *sexual reproduction. Fusion normally occurs between haploid nuclei and follows immediately after *plasmogamy, resulting in the formation of a diploid zygote. In the higher fungi, especially the basidiomycetes, karyogamy may be delayed and occur separately from plasmogamy, resulting in a *dikaryotic mycelium.
