isoquinoline alkaloids

A group of alkaloids, the structures of which are based on the isoquinoline nucleus. They are derived from the amino acids tyrosine and phenylalanine. Examples are morphine, from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), and curare, from the bark of Strychnos species.
