isomorphic

1. (homologous) Describing a life cycle in which the alternating generations are morphologically identical as, for example, in the brown alga Dictyota. Individuals may be identified as sporophyte or gametophyte by observation of the reproductive process. Isomorphic life cycles are seldom seen in archegoniate plants. An exception is Psilotum, in which the subterranean gametophyte resembles, in anatomy, branching pattern, and in the production of multicellular gemmae, the rhizome of the sporophyte.
2. Describing an organ or organism that exists in one form only. Compare dimorphism , polymorphism.
