intussusception

The insertion of cellulose into spaces within the wall of an elongating  cell.   Water  passes  into  the vacuole of the cell, creating an outward pressure on the wall, which consequently stretches. The new cellulose is then incorporated, the result being an increase in wall area. The next step is usually the thickening of the walls by *apposition.
