infraspecific variation

Differences in appearance exhibited by different members of the same species or breeding population. The variation may be a result of environmental influences, such as nutrition, crowding, seasonal effects, etc. It may also be due to genetic factors, principally the effects of genetic recombination and mutation. Whatever the ultimate cause, natural selection plays a major role in governing the extent of the variation and types of individuals present. The term may be applied to characteristics only apparent by advanced laboratory techniques, as well as to those readily visible to the naked eye.
