indehiscent

Describing a fruit or fruiting body that does not open to disperse its contents. Indehiscent fruiting bodies are thought to have developed from suppression of the naturally occurring opening mechanisms found in dehiscent structures. The seeds or spores are released either when the surrounding wall decays or when it is eaten by an animal.
