incompatibility

The failure of gametes from genetically similar material to fuse due to physiological or morphological mechanisms. In some fungi, e.g. Mucor, sexual fusion cannot occur between similar races or strains. In seed plants complex mechanisms have developed involving the interactions of pollen and stigmatic tissue.
