Describing seed germination in which the cotyledons remain underground as there is no great lengthening of the hypocotyl. The cotyledons gradually give up their contents to feed the developing plumule and radicle. Hypogeal germination is seen in the broad bean (Vicia faba). The term is also used of fruits that develop underground, such as those of the peanut (Arachis hypogea) and of the Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea). Compare epigeal.
