hypocotyl

The region of the stem derived from that part of the embryo between the cotyledons and the radicle. The transition from the stelar arrangement of the stem to that of the root occurs in the hypocotyl. The 'root' of certain crop plants, e.g. turnip (Brassica rapa), is actually a swollen hypocotyl. Compare epicotyl.
