hormogonium

A short filament of more or less spherical cells that may be formed on germination of an *akinete in certain filamentous blue-green algae. Although it does not possess flagella it is able to move, possibly by the streaming of mucilage along the surface. When it comes to rest on a suitable surface it gives rise to filaments.
