haptonema

A threadlike structure that arises between the two flagella in algae belonging to the *Haptophyta. It is not involved in cell movement, but may be used for temporary anchorage. The length varies and in some cases it is coiled when the cell is motile. Internally it consists of three concentric membranes surrounding a ring of fibres and a central space.
