green manure

A fast-growing inexpensive crop that is sown towards the end of the growing season with the intention of ploughing or digging it in a short while later when it is still green. This increases the amount of organic matter in the soil. Legumes, such as clovers (Trifolium) and lupins (Lupinus), also increase the nitrogen content of the soil and are often used.
