A * microbody that contains the five enzymes of the glyoxylate cycle. Acetyl residues that are derived from the fatty acids of stored fats are converted to carbohydrates via succinic acid released in the glyoxylate cycle. Glyoxysomes are therefore found in those cells of higher plants where fats are utilized in this way, e.g. in the endosperm or cotyledons of fat-storing seeds. They also contain an enzyme that catalyses the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen.
