gland

A group of one or more cells whose main function is to secrete a specific chemical substance or substances. A gland may be on or near the plant surface, discharging the secretion externally, or internal, releasing it into a canal or reservoir. Examples of the former are glandular hairs, nectaries, and hydathodes; the resin canals of Pinus are an example of the latter. See also laticifer , oil gland , trichome.
