An order of gymnosperms containing only one living species, the maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba), which is known only in cultivation. It is a tall deciduous tree and bears fan-shaped leaves, usually with a distinct notch opposite the petiole. The leaf venation is exceptional among extant gymnosperms in being dichotomously branching. The Ginkgoales were more abundant in the Mesozoic and are possibly an offshoot of the Cordaitales.
