genetics

The study of inheritance. The subject is now so large that it impinges on all branches of biology. It also has wide applications in agriculture (e.g. plant and animal breeding), medicine (e.g. blood typing), and industry (e.g. synthesis of antibiotics, hormones, etc. by genetic engineering). See also biochemical genetics , classical genetics , cytogenetics , population genetics.
