genetic erosion

The loss of genetic variation and the consequent narrowing of the genetic base of cultivated plants through the introduction of new improved varieties of crops that can be grown over wide areas. The continued existence of locally adapted primitive varieties is threatened by their large-scale replacement with adaptable high-yielding varieties. The situation is particularly serious in *gene centres , where valuable genes for such characters as disease resistance may be lost. See also genetic resources.
