gene mutation

An alteration to a single gene resulting from a change in the number, type, or sequence of bases specifying the amino acids in a polypeptide. Such mutations are not visible by microscopy. Gene mutations result in new allelic forms of a gene. See also chromosome mutation , mutation , mutagen.
