gas vacuole

A structure made up of numerous gas-filled vesicles, many of which may be found in the cells of certain aquatic bacteria and blue-green algae. The density of the cell depends on how much gas is contained within the vesicles. The position of the organism in a column of water can thus be regulated by these structures. The vesicles are unusual in being bound by a protein rather than phosphoglyceride membrane.
