gametogenesis

1. The formation of gametes. Gametes are usually formed mitotically by the *gametophyte generation though in some groups (see diplontic ) gametogenesis corresponds with meiosis. Gametes may form in any cell of the gametophyte, as occurs in the green alga Ulva, or they may be confined to specialized organs, such as antheridia and archegonia. Compare sporogenesis.
