galactose

An aldohexose sugar commonly found in plants. It normally does not exist in the free state but as polymers (see galactan ). It is also a constituent of the oligosaccharides raffinose and stachyose. Oxidation of galactose yields galacturonic acid, which on polymerization forms pectic acid.
