fructose 1,6-bisphosphate

A phosphorylated derivative of fructose, situated at the main control point of glycolysis. In glycolysis fructose 1,6-bisphosphate is formed from fructose 6-phosphate by the allosteric enzyme phosphofructokinase, which is inhibited by ATP and citrate, and stimulated by ADP and AMP. This reaction is the rate-limiting step of glycolysis. The reverse reaction, which is a step in glucose synthesis, also involves an allosteric enzyme, fructose bisphosphatase. Fructose 1,6-bisphosphate is also an intermediate in the pentose phosphate pathway.
