freeze fracturing

A technique used in electron microscopy in which the specimen is frozen quickly at very low temperatures and then fractured along lines of weakness. The new surface so formed is coated with a thin layer of carbon or platinum, which is then floated off to form a replica of the surface. Freeze etching is a modification of the technique in which the water vapour is allowed to evaporate from the fracture surface before the replica is made. This takes longer but allows higher resolution of the specimen.
