fragmentation

A form of *asexual reproduction in which the parent splits into several pieces, each of which may develop into a new individual. It is seen in many filamentous algae, e.g. Ulothrix and Spirogyra. It is also a feature of some aquatic plants, e.g. waterweeds (Elodea), and of the gametophytes of certain bryophytes. Compare budding , fission.
