endodermis

A layer of cells at the boundary of the *cortex and stele, usually regarded as the innermost layer of the cortex. It is generally clearly seen in all roots and in pteridophyte and certain dicotyledon stems. A *Casparian strip is usually present. When the endodermis contains numerous starch grains, it is known as a starch sheath.
