The second highest category in the taxonomic hierarchy. Divisions are composed of classes. The number of divisions within the plant kingdom varies with the system of classification. The Latin names of divisions terminate in -phyta, e.g. Tracheophyta. Several botanists now adopt the term *phylum in place of division.
